Sawston Parish Council
Update on Lynton Way Skate Park Closure (15 May 2026)
The Parish Council was informed by a resident of the possible presence of
asbestos in the soil surrounding the skate park. The resident had independently
got samples and arranged for them to be tested.
The Parish Council acted immediately and closed the skate park while further
professional testing was carried out. The results confirmed the presence of
asbestos in two small, localised areas, specifically within small fragments of
debris found on site.
Environmental Health has advised that asbestos only poses a risk if it becomes
airborne. The material identified was contained within small, isolated fragments
of construction-related debris found on site. Testing confirmed that the majority
of the area around the skate park is not contaminated.
Arrangements have been made for specialist contractors, Betongpark, to safely
remove the affected material and replace the soil as a precautionary and highly
conservative measure. The earliest available date for this work is Monday 18
May, and the affected area will remain securely fenced off until the works are
completed.
New topsoil will be supplied from a reputable, quality-assured source, screened
and independently tested to meet British Standards (BS3882).
We appreciate that this closure is disappointing, particularly so soon after the
skate park was opened. However, these precautionary measures are being
taken to provide an additional level of assurance over and above standard
practice and to ensure public safety.
At each point, the Council has followed the advice and recommendations of the
Environmental Health officers.
Once the Parish Council is satisfied that the remediation work has been
completed to the appropriate standard, the skate park will be reopened.
Thank you for your understanding
Temporary Closure of Skate Park (29th April 2026)
The Parish Council has had to temporarily close the skate park due to a maintenance issue.
We are working closely with Betongpark to ensure the issue is rectified as soon as possible so that the skate park can be safely reopened.
While these works are taking place, we will also be replacing the soil surrounding the skate park to encourage healthy grass growth and improve the overall appearance of the area.
Thank you for your understanding and patience. Further updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.
Sawston Parish Council is delighted to announce that the new skate park on Lynton Way is now officially open.
We hope this fantastic new facility will be well used and become a valuable asset for our community, providing a fun and inclusive space for people of all ages and abilities.
Next Phase of Works
The next phase will involve installing a new footpath from the skate park to the corner by Icknield Primary School. This area will be temporarily fenced off while the work is carried out. The skate park will remain open and available for use throughout this period.
Extra Full Parish Council Meeting – Proposed Skate Park
South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) have confirmed the Parish Council does not require planning permission for the skate park as it is under 4 meters in height. We do however, require a Certificate of Lawful Development which has now been applied for. This does mean that it is for the Parish Council to make the decision and not SCDC.
The meeting will be on Wednesday 7th January, 7.30pm at Spicers Pavilion, Cambridge Road, CB22 3DG.
Everyone is welcome
