Whats new in Sawston, have your say

Lynton Way Skatepark,

The skate park is now complete and already very popular with local skaters.

Lynton Way Pavilion

The council is working on a design brief so we can select a company to design and build the project.

If you have any comments at this stage, please use the feedback form shown below by selecting ‘Lynton Way Pavilion’ on the drop-down list. We’re very interested in suggestions about what we should include in the design.

20mph speed limit

Given the rapidly increasing size of Sawston, both in housing and commercial / scientific research facilities to the northeast of Babraham road, the Parish Council feels it should now act to protect all the village’s pedestrians and road users.

Why are we doing this

  • Cambridgeshire County Council provide funding every year for Parish Councils to apply to introduce 20mph speed limits for roads where this would be a benefit. The primary need is to protect New Road where 1400 children go to Sawston Village College every day – many using bicycles and lifts in cars at the same time as competing with HGV vehicles and six buses bringing pupils from neighbouring villages – but the same protection should apply to all the other roads within the central core area of Sawston.
  • Research shows that reducing the speed of vehicles saves lives and injuries. Hitting a pedestrian at 30mph makes them seven times more likely to die compared to a 20mph impact. And for children, being struck by a vehicle at 20mph has a 90% survival rate, but at 30mph, the survival rate drops to about 50%.
  • The application process requires Parish Councils to answer very detailed questions. A panel then awards funding to 8 councils a list of over >100 councils applying each year. The majority of the successful applications were for schemes that covered the whole of a village.
  • Sawston Parish Council is therefore starting the process of preparing all the information we need in order to be able to apply in the next funding round.

We’d love to hear your views about this proposal – we’re keen to hear from as many people as possible.

Please provide your opinions on the 20mph zone by  5 pm on Monday, 5th January 2026.

In particular we’d like to know:

  • Do you support the idea of a 20mph zone in general?
  • Should Babraham Road be included?
  • Where should the zone start on Cambridge Road and London Road?
